ECMA Conference: Protecting Our Critical Infrastructures: Issues for Resilient Design

Together with the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom relations and Leiden University, Ecma will organize an international working conference on the topic of critical infrastructure protection (CIP), on April 18-19, 2007. In the post-9/11 world, CIP has become one of the biggest challenges confronting national governments. Policymakers wrestle with a range of issues, such as risk assessment, future trends and threats, the intelligent design of resilient structures, the interface between public and private actors, and the organization of crisis management capacity at the supranational level.

This conference in the heart of The Hague provides a venue for European policymakers, private partners, and academic experts to explore and discuss these strategic issues. Through a highly interactive working format, participants learn to recognize avoidable pitfalls, recognize strategic opportunities, identify best practices and build transnational networks. Participation is limited and will be at a first come, first serve basis. More information on the program will follow soon. An academic board of experts has been established to advise on the conference program (see here). For more information, contact Mr. R. van Dijk (Rene.Dijk@minbzk.nl) at the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. Please, check the conference website at http://www.cipconference.nl/

CRN Conference: Management of Political Risks in Government, Business and Society
Political risks are a major challenge for public administrations, international organizations, and private companies. Today's functionally and geographically interconnected and integrated world leads to a wide array of new risks and threats, which may impair or even inhibit political, social, or business objectives. How can political risk be managed actively in an interdependent world? How can risk analysts and decision-makers plan for an uncertain future in an uncertain international environment? What strategies should they follow and what methodological approaches may help to identify, assess, and mitigate risks?

The goal of the CRN Conference 2007 (June 1-2, in Zurich, Switzerland) is to initiate and deepen an international dialog on the challenges, opportunities, and limitations of political risk management. It will bring together experts from public administrations, security institutions, private corporations, and international organizations in order to reflect upon the topic from many perspectives. The event aims at connecting different groups of experts through an intense exchange of ideas, thus fostering the emergence of new ideas and innovative solutions. The conference also helps to establish new contacts and networks and to cultivate existing ones. The results of the conference will be summarized in a conference report and made available on the CRN website
. Check here  for more information.
